Course Description
This quickly-paced, college preparatory course is literature based, focusing on American Literature's development. College Prep 10 builds upon the ninth grade foundation by increasing the degree of analysis and interpretation so that students may learn to consider the content's connection to American themes, history, or previously learned material. Students must complete outside reading and writing assignments. Students are expected to be able to learn multiple tasks simultaneously and to refine their work repeatedly. To prepare the students for college, students will learn the following: literature appreciation and analysis; practical, analytical, and critical composition; high school research skills; vocabulary; interpersonal communication; standardized test-taking skills for reading and writing content. The sophomore research paper must adhere to the MLA-format and fulfill specific length and resources standards; as juniors, students will refine these papers. Course Materials
English 10
This course focuses on strengthening student reading and writing skills. We will use the Prentice Hall American Literature book as a vehicle to master grade-appropriate skills in reading, such as making inferences and identifying and/or explaining stated or implied main ideas and relevant supporting details from the text. The teacher will give the students opportunities to practice summarizing and paraphrasing ideas. Each student will be responsible for analyzing the text and providing support for interpretations of different selections found in the anthology or novelettes that establish American themes, connect to history, and/or previously learned material. We will also develop research skills, enhance our vocabulary and build interpersonal communication. The students in this class will also review and utilize valuable test-taking skills that are vital to conquering the PSSA Reading and PSSA Writing Tests.
